I only use snaffle bits because they are very gentle on the horse's mouth, and I don't believe in using harsh bits on "hard-mouthed" horses. It might seem like the harsher bit is working for a while, but soon the horse becomes "toughened" to the harsher bit, and an even harsher one is needed. Its a never ending battle.

Hello. I have a Standardbred mare off the racetrack, and she has a snafle copper mouthed bit. It is uneven though. One side is long and thin and the other is short and fat. Are they supposed to be like this, or what? She did not come with this bit.

I think this is a great topic. I think we should not use bits, if we really wanted to have a great relationship full of trust and care, we should not try to ruin them by controlling. All those 'horse whisperers' should take a clue and just ride without tack, the way it was suposed to be!

Personally, I use only snaffle bits on all my horses. I always ride with a loose rein also. Never had a problem with any horse getting them to stop.

I agree with Jodi. Sometimes I just don't get why people use strong bits! The solid ones with big arches in the middle really hurt the roof of the horse's moutk when you use rein pressure!

i personally think that a full cheek snaffle is the best bet for training a horse to give to the bit both breaking at the poll and side to side. the horse should want to find the point of reward not forced to set his head or give his head

If we rule out sharp or pinching bits, then every bit is only as good as the hands holding the reins. I've seen mouth injuries with a snaffle and truely artistic riding with a California spade, it's all in the hands

Snaffles are the way to go but you also have to realize that for some sports of riding, dressage for example, when you get into the higher levels you need to use a double bridle for all the amount of collection you do. Another thing is that you have to train them properly to go onto the bit and don't grab onto their mouths.

I use a hackamore on my boy. I've had such a great response from using it that I am hoping to use it on my other 2 I am training at the moment. I personally think that shanked bits can reflect a lack of skill on the riders behalf. I have seen a LOT of lazy riders with enormously shanked bits at rodeos. I would probably use a mild snaffle if I had to. I have one horse that I am hopefully going to train to cart, and wonder if anyone has any tips about that? (Dont believe I can go the hackamore here!) thanks heaps

All horses should be schooled in a snaffle...it takes a well trained horse and rider to use a curb bit...I also want to ask what you mean by hackamore..Bosal..or mechanical hack...

Hi Tricia The hackamore I use is not like a bosal, nor is it like the 'mechanical' ones I have seen that look a bit hideous to me. It's got a wide piece of leather covered in sheepskin around the nose, that is quite loose, and a short shank (less than 5cm I'd say) and all you have to do is let the weight of the rein do the work. Maybe I sounded a bit 'hardline' on the curb/long shanked bits. I just see them SO badly mis used. ie to stop, people yank on them so hard that the horses mouth is gaping open wide, or they yank hard on the reins to turn. I've seen a lot of American folks use them nicely. I dont know what kind of training your riders do, but I'd love to see more of it going on in Australia. You see a lot of 'cowboys' (which is a put down in Aus - where it means a showoff horse person who is more worried about their own image than the horse)at Rodeos down here unfortunately. Cheers

If I could I would ride in a rope halter all the time, but shows frown upon that! I show western pleasure, hunter pleasure, jump, team pen, rope, drive, etc. For some disciplines a certain type of bit it needed. I have seen horses have their mouth ripped off with a plain fat snaffle. A godd horse is responsive to the rider's shift of position, how they sit and where your eyes are. I am very big into round penning and flexions. Some horses have to go in a certain bit becuase of teh discipline, but some horse have to go into a bit becuase of the training they have had. That's just my opinion!

ok for all of you who seem to think that the snaffle bit is the best and most gentle bit out there.. Go out to your tack room and take that "gentle bit" and put your index finger in the split and squeeze the two sides together and then come tell me just HOW gentle those bits are. as for the hackamores.. arn't they the nasty things that put the pressure on te horses nose rather than the mouth? Hmmm you do know that they have been known to break the horses nose right? I have a bit that I use and I couldn't be MORE happier and I have a fully collected horse under me at all times with this bit. It is a special made bit that gives the horse complete tounge relief! I LOVE IT AND SO DOES MY HORSE!! We are very happy riders.

Shelley, It isn't a bit that makes a well-behaved or "collected" horse....it is good training. No matter what bit you're using, obviously you know how to use it properly. As for the severity debate about snaffles and other bits...a bit is only as harsh as the hands the hold the reins.

anonymous, you said all a horse needs is a halter. well thats not true. i had a stud that we rode him with nothing(except my dad he did this with a saddle)and used leg presures to turn. when you wanted to stop or slow down you told him what you wanted and he did it. i rode him from the age of 4 or 5 to about 11 then my dad sold him. i wish he wouldnt have but money got scares. but anyways, i have a horse that wont stop. i think its the arab in him no offence to anyone. i hate arabs. i personally go for quarter horses. but i do barrels and i cant always stop. when i use a snaffle i have no control. i have a very mean bit on him. its a gag/hackamore. very mean bit. makes normal horses sit down. i have a question for all you peole talking about snaffles. whats your definition of a snaffle. many people mistake the definition of it. i will tell yall after yall tell me yalls definition. but thanks people. I use the type of bit that fits my horse. If you have a barrel horse you can't just use the halter. And any bit can be harsh if you make it that way, even the snaffel.

Cowgirl, try retraining this horse. I agree with Lilcountry to a point, harder bit harder mouth. The bit IS only as harsh as the hands holding the reins. So if a horseman/woman uses a California spade on a superbly trained horse , it is no more harsh that a person riding a horse tackless. As far as a snaffle (that being a bit, jointed or solid that has no shanks or leverage) goes, there are some horses that just do not like them, we own such a horse, and ride her in a swivel mouth curb which she adores. Does this make her ill trained?? Hard mouthed? No, it doesn't. She is soft mouthed, and easy to ride. We show her and she does really well. IMO

I don't understand why bits were made in the first place. How would you like it if you had some alien creature up on your back, not only telling you where to go but pulling around on a piece of metal in your mouth to accomplish it? I've read a lot about negative effects of bits - I remember one said that it confuses eating with exercise - which could be why horses are chewing on their bits all the time. Either way, you look at the way horses open their mouths to avoid bits, chew on them, grab them in their teeth, or refuse to let them in their mouths at all, and there has got to be a problem. I don't like doing anything that relies on pain to accomplish a goal - IMO, what a bit does. So instead I bought a black beta Biothane sidepull and have had absolutely nothing but excellent experiences with it. Keep in mind that I'm a 16-year-old with a young Arab I broke myself (and it wasn't exactly easy; she had had no handling before I got her when she was 2) - so people automatically assume I need extra control and therefore a more severe bit. They are quite shocked to see I ride with no bit at all. I like my sidepull *much* better because I do have more control - my horse can't grab the bit in her teeth or do anything to avoid what I'm asking her to do, if she were to take off I could quite easily pull her head aroud and make her run in circles, I don't have to worry at all that I'm hurting her, she's happier, I can tell that she's licking and chewing because she's being submissive and NOT because she's "recovering" from the bit, there are never battles putting it on, and it doesn't get all dirty from horse slobber like the bit and surrounding material would. I would highly reccomend this for anyone, but especially new riders (particularly young ones!) because if a jerky hand movement is made or too much pressure is applied, the horse does not suffer at all.

If you are using a bit correctly--and I emphasize the word correctly--it does not "rely on pain" to accomplish communication. Like others have mentioned, I also match the bit with the horse. One horse uses a kimberwicke with a low-port, another one uses an "S" hackamore and another one likes the french-link snaffle. For the person who said they only want to do "natural" things with their horse, why even ride them? It's not natural, either. Neither are shoes or a whole lot of other things we do with our equine friends. Communication is the point of what a bit does--no matter which one you use. A California spade bit is a work of art in the right hands and an instrument of torture in the wrong hands. So is a hackamore, no matter how short the shanks. So is a snaffle, if it's too big for your horse's mouth, or if you are pulling back on both sides of the bit at once, causing a nutcracker effect. As an aside, lots of people think a Tom Thumb is a) a snaffle and b) a mild, harmless bit. It's c) neither! That doesn't mean it's necessarily a bad bit, but it fits into the category of fairly harsh bits: shanks + a nutcracker mouthpiece. The name of the game is good horsemanship, good hands, good communication, IMHO.

I do hunter/jumper and eventing on arabian mare and I use just a loose ring snaffle but sometimes I have a really hard time getting her to stop or slow down especially with other people besides me on her. I would like to get a harshe bit but I don't want to hurt her. Do any of you all have suggestions or ways to break her bad habit. Thanks!!

Kisa you could try doing lots of exercising wit ur arabian..Try doing circles and figure 8's getting her to listen to your LEGS more...Wait untillllllllll u r perfect at a walk theen try a trot if she doesn't slow down when you ask her to, then go back to the basics Gradually move up onto jumping.

I read western and I use a low port,grazing bit.My horse can get very stubborn and she has a hard mouth,but I dont think this bit is very harsh,but it keeps her in control.I think snaffles are o.k,but I have never used one on my horses.I believe that the bit can be just as hard or soft as the hands make it.

Some of you have a lot to learn about horsemanship if you are making uneducated opinions about the bits thats are being used. I also am still learning. A few years ago I would have never considered using any of the CA style bits because I thought they were harsh. But any bit can be harsh in the wrongs hands. I have since been indtoduced to the California horsemanship and I believe it is very good. The Spanish were true horseman. The rider and the horse must be properly educated on how to use thes bits. Snaffles are great and I use them to start young horses. But I believe a horse must progress into a curb style bit in order to perform at an avanced skill level. I am now taking one of my horses from the snaffle to the hackamore with a bosal. (mechanical hackamores are not true hackamores.) And a year from now I plan to put my horse in the classic two-rein, with a Ca style bridle bit. I am looking to learn more about California horsemanship and Ca bits.

Hello. I just read your opinions and would also like to have your opinion regarding this question: I use a bosal hackamore for my 6 year old gelding, which works nicely. I would also like to use it for my 19 year old mare but when I have tried this, she starts running off with me, lowering her head and bucking, when I ask her to lope. I wanted to make it nicer for her not using a bit, but I have to use a bit to stop the bucking. Do you have a suggestion to how I should stop the bucking when using a bosal hackamore? Or should I just quit the idea?

In regard to your question anonymous, I wouldn't give up on the hackamore on your older mare. You might try some simple guiding and bending exercises in the bosal or you may want to start this in your regular bit and switch back to the hakamore once you a confident with the moves. Begin by teaching her to stop with one rein. This becomes a safety zone for both of you. This is the first thing I teach a young colt when I begin riding it. To do this, slide down on your left rein and bring her head around to the left while using your left leg to disengage the hindquarters. When she untracks and moves her hindquarters over, release your leg, but continue to hold the rein until she is soft in her face, then release. Simply reverse these cues for a one rein stop to the right. Being comfortable with this manuever can get you out of most sticky situations. Once you can do this at a walk, try it at the trot, and eventually you will be able to do it at the lope. Hopefully through this preparation she won't buck anymore, but if she trys you'll be ready to control the situation. I too have just gotten a hackmore for my 4 year old and would like try it on my 14 year old mare. I don't know how it's going to go yet since I'm still waiting for the bosal to arrive by mail! I use to think you should never ride without a bit in a horses mouth ,but a 17 yr old guy taught this older lady a thing or two, when I had him put a special training bit in my 9yr olds mouth. The horse would only sling her head, He unmounted and begins to put just a halter on her ,mounted back up ,the horse acted like a pro. I trained this horse to do everything from the ground, even neck rein,and of course a halter.I'm not sure if it's totally correct ,because I haven't been able to ride her ,health problems, but she sure responded great that day. Don't judge a halter by it's looks

it is so true that the bit is only as gentle as the rider's hands. As far as that one question about slowing a horse that is hard to slow, work quietly in an arena and get him soft. There is a point when you pick up on the reins that the horse feels you and if you are real soft about it, he knows what you want. if you just get frustrated and jerk a horse's mouth it never works, it only scares him.

Hello, I just recently purchased a 7 year old QH who I am going to use in collge rodeo. I have been using a mechanical hackamore on him and he has done great with it. I know the contraversy surrounding this training device. But my gelding shows no discomfort, he responds very well to it when I have tried numerous other bits that have not worked at all, and he responds to the slightest pull on the reins. Although it's said that this is a "torture device", I believe that the hands of the rider is the key factor....ultimatley what is more humane...pulling back slightly on a more severe piece....or hauling back on one less severe?????????

Having ridden several different styles, I've used just about every thing from a rubber mullenmouth snaffle to a double (weymouth) bridle with long shanks. It depends on the horse, the hands, and the training. My goal is always to use the mildest that will work. Sometimes a little heavier bit will work wonders on a horse that pulls or lugs, then after training to get him softer & responsive (with good hands), work on going back to the softer bit. Some horses even with good hands and training need more "bite" to their bit. Or save the stronger bit for competition -snaffle for dressage and kimberwink for cross-country. There are all different types of snaffles out there-had one horse that loved sweet iron, another that liked his 3 piece Dr. Bristol. Myler Bits makes some really cool "Comfort Snaffles" . If anyone has tried them, I'd like to know how they worked. And remember "Good riders are made, not born"!!!!!

I have a very headstrong Arab who I ride in a french link snaffle when I school him or ride by myself as he is very well behaved. However, when I ride out in the company of other horses, I ride him in a very strong mechanical hackamore because otherwise he bolts. I have spent about 4 years going from the basics upward but as soon as he is around other horses he gets extremely excited and I cannot usually stop him. Often he bolts and won't stop for miles. I would like to say to everybody who has a strong horse not to waste time as I did going over the basics too much because if you have a naturally excitable horse like an Arab you will have a hard time subduing their temperment no matter how much work you put in. If you have a problem stopping your horse then give them more work. This I have found is the only solution to stopping my horse. Before you go changing your bit/hackamore on any horse try and understand first the behaviour of your horse, as changing bits around will not solve the problem, it will only hide it.
