I have a foal who has a cow hocked look now for the last few weeks any help?

Posted By: Debbie

I don't know how old your foal is, but I have seen many foals less than 2 months who look gangly with cow hocks or knock knees, and they end up growing out of it in a few months when their muscles catch up growing. If he didn't look cow hocked before, and does now, he might grow out of it, but i would check with your veterinarian if you are really worried about it.

Check with your farrier if this foal has not had regular hoof care. A baby's hooves don't always (or even often) grow level. Many weanlings also go through a fast period of growth where (as above poster comments) certain body parts grow faster than the rest of their body. Even many yearlings will look weak at the knees or hocks until their musculature (sp) and strength catches up with their height.

I have an 18 year old gelding that has had the diaherra for the last week. Nothing in his schedule nor has his personality changed and he has never had this problem in the last eight years that I have owned him. Does anybody have any ideas as to what might be causing this sudden problem or any suggestions as to what I should do.

I own a 14 year old athletic, TB gelding. About 5 weeks ago he pulled his tricep muscle on a trail ride(the tricep is below thier shoulder) He has finally stopped limping at the walk and alot better at the trot, but still noticable. I know injuries like this take ALOT of patience, but I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how I could speed up his recovery or make him feel better. So far I have been told to lunge him.

has anybody got any ideas about my yearling. i think she has a touch of rainscald on her back.. it is all scabby.. any ideas how to treat it?

I had this message up a few days ago, but I can't see it on the page now! As to why, I don't know, anyway....... ....I have a 14 year old athletic, TB, gelding. Recently on a trail ride he strained his muscle below his shoulder. (tricep) The vet told me to let him rest and it could be up to 6 weeks! It's the fifth week now and he has stopped limping at the walk, but still bobs a bit at the trot! I want to make sure he recovers well and help him recover soon! He loves to ride (and so do I)and I just hate to see him sitting around!(he hates it too) I know things like this take a tremedous amount of patience, but I was wondering if anyone has had this experience before and has any suggestions to help him feel better, faster!\? Thanks for any help you can give! Please feel free to e-mail me also at moose_time@hotmail.com

I own a gelding that is 10 yrs. old. He isn't gaining weight and eats 12lbs of equine senior a day plus a lot of hay. What is wrong with him? He won't gain weight.

Hello-I have a 9 y/o gelding that was treated for colic on Saturday and for possible founder on Sunday. He is in pain, he lays down most of the time, he will pick up front foot and curl it under his belly and then do the same with the other one. He will paw the ground and then lay down. He isn't eating as usual, but when the vet has his medicated, he seems to not have any problems. He will chase the mare for no reason and this is unusal for him. He will run to a certain place in the pasture and paw at it and then lay down. I'm at a loss here and the vet also. If you have any idea, please share them with me. Would appreciate it very much.

Aud, Saw your rain scald question. I've had it real bad this season with my lot. In a nutshell, apply iodine, you can try wetting the area first with water then apply the iodine and rub it till it foams. Keep rubbing till stops foaming. Do it every day. You could get a shot of penicillian as well. One of my horses was so 'bad' he still has it and we are still treating it, but the iodine definitely helps a lot. Good luck.

My horse stumbled and his knee is swollen, What can I do toget he sewllig down?

Posted By: stanley

Stanley, you can hose the swelled area with cold water to reduce swelling. Also, many people say that alternating cold and hot treatments can reduce the swelling very well. Use a bucket and fill it with warm water from the house or other heated water source. Use a sponge to hold the warmth on the swelled area for about 2 minutes. Then, switch to the cold water from the hose or faucet for 2 minutes. You can repeat this about 4-5 times, then stop for about 20 minutes or so. Repeat the whole process until the swelling has gone down. You should also call your vet while you are doing this and set up a time when he can see your horse the same day just incase anything else is wrong with the swelled area.

I have an 11 year old Thoroughbred Gelding. We recently moved a short distance away from home to a new pasture. He has always had problems keeping weight on but now I am having real trouble with him. He is very thin. When I separate him from the other horses he will not eat at all. When I let him forage with the others he gains no weight. I have an excellent suppliment that was formulated for him by my Vet and myself. However he will not eat it now. He always used to. He is not sick, in pain, or lonely. Does anyone have any good tricks on how to feed a picky and nervous horse. He is getting skinny and I am worried about his health. His teeth have been floated and he has been wormed. Currently he is grazing in a grass pasture with five other horses and being offered his supplement. Thanks.

I was wondering if with a good diet and proper exercise he might gro out of this problem. If some one has any insight i would be extremly grateful.

I am interested in purchasing a three month old appendix.I would like to use him as a hunter jumper. He seems to be cow hocked. Will this ruin his chances at a good show career.Or with a good diet and proper exercise (which he isnt getting right know)will it become less distinct or will he grow out of it all together. If any one has any insight I would be very grateful.

This is for any of you who have battled with grease heel, sometimes aslo called scratches or mud fever. I worked diligently with my vet and sought several opinions on how to treat the greasy emmitting, scabby scores on the lower fetlock area of the hind legs. Commonly they only get it on one leg, most often a white leg. The condition may spread up the leg and will cause hair loss and inflamed skin. After using medicated shampoo, ointments, anti-inflammatory meds and antibiotics on my gelding which had little effect, I tried Shapleys M-T-G. It is a hair conditioning product I boughten which said it also worked on fungus. So I tried it and it helped soften and remove the hardened cracked scabs after a few treatments. It worked great on that horse. However, it didn't work as well on my mare who later got grease heel. What finally worked on her after using iccthamol ointment and an anti-inflammatory gel which wasn't doing the trick, my vet came up with a new remedy. An astringent-like product called Sure Cure. He added a dose a dexamethazone (a corticosteriod) right to it and gave me a antibiotic ointment to try. Within days the red inflamed skin healed and the scabs began to go away and we're happily and finally grease heel free! This condition is very hard to treat. What I've learned is that many different things can cause it and that sometimes it is bacterial or fungal or even both. My vet said that treatments such as using a medicated shampoo on the area and iccthamol are usually effective. However in a bad case it needs more and the Sure Cure sure worked for me. I hope this will help any of you who are as frustrated with this condition as I was.

I have a horse that is very stressful. I get him out for maybe ten min. and he is already sweating up a storm. I know he is in great shape because I ride him at the least 3 times a week and its always a good work out. I barrel race him. He is alway prancy and hiper. He never gets worn out and he just does not chill or relax. Any sugestions? thanks

CELESTE: I have always heard GOATS are greaat companions

Posted By: Shawnee

Michelle: Your horse might need his teeth floated. when they can't chew there food right they can't digest it right so they don't get the nutrients they need. Or if he is cribbing it is hard to get them to gain weight. A cribbing collar can help but not always I have a friend who has electric wire around the stall to keep it from cribbing its very effective

does anybody know the right angl a horses hooves should be at?

Posted By: Shawnee

I think the average angle is between 54 and 58 degrees depending on the horse's conformation.

Hi I have a 5 yr old Mustang that I just noticed has a "cyst" above her left nostril--it seems to be filled with fluid as it doenst feel hard but is moveable--its about the size of a quarter--any ideas as to what would cause this? No apparent injury on the outside--could it be a tooth thing? Im new at horses--Thanks!

Posted By: Annie

Shawnee and Eclipse: This might sound harsh but take it with a grain of salt. Yu have a high strung horse, and because of this you are probably not relaxed when you ride. In my opinion, barrel racing is too high stress for that particular horse. My mare was like that, untill we took her offf of the rodeo circut and tried reining and rail classes. Try thinking calm when you ride, and it might help to lounge him(her).

I need HELP. My horse MAY have pulled a muscle. I have not yet called the vet because he isn't favouring his leg as much. Last night he didn't want to come in and when he did his WHOLE back hid leg was swollen and had heat in it. I gave him bute and he is now on stall rest. Tonight I hand walked him for 20 mins and he was fine but when i troted him he was lame. ANy suggestions? after walking him the swelling went down slightly. I NEED to get this looked after. He's a very quite 15 yr old Quarter horse I've had for ten years. I'm open and will try ANY suggestions.

Posted By: Quarterhorse Lover

Kim, Talk to your equine representitive at your local feed supply store. Hay cubes may be helpful, your horse still gets hay but without teh dust, or soak the flakes you give to your horse.

Posted By: Quarterhorse Lover

QUARTER HORSE LOVER I would talk to you vet

Posted By: anonymous

Thanks, but I gotit all cleared up myself. It was nothingtoo serious I worked wtih a vet for awhile.. I knew it wasn't too serious when the swelling started to go down..thanks tho

I have a 5 year old Quarter Horse mare with a swollen lower back leg. I gave Penicillin for several days but it didn't help. Some swelling has went down but not much. I think she got it from standing in the mud for a long period of time after being pushed out of the barn by the other horses. Any ideas would be helpful.
