Okay, this is going to be a strange one...a piece of baling twine. I have been through training using John Lyons and Parelli techniques with several of my horses and am confident only using 1 piece of baling twine (loosely around the horse's neck) for riding. I am not sure if this is really considered 'tack' though!

The one piece of tack that I can't live without is a hoof pick, just think if we didn't have hoofpicks then our horses feet would get infected and they would go lame!

For me, it would a good snaffle bridle. That's pretty much what I ride all of my horses in so I'd be almost lost without it. Though I could give that baling twine a try..LOL

I would have to agree with Wendy...a good snaffle bridle is indespensible. My eggbutt snaffle does everything from jumping to dressage to trail rides to lunging and long reining...I couldn't live without it!

Perhaps not the single, most important item, but the one piece of gear that I learned never to be without is a small file. Over the years, I've had several situations in which I had to remove a shoe while miles away from the stable. Cutting the clenches can be easily done with a small file and the shoe removed without damage to the hoof. When you need it, nothing else will work!

I know this isn't exactly tack, but the one thing I have with me at all times at the farm is vetrap. Ive used it for everything, latching a gate, put around horse and human injurys, wrap slippery stirrups so that feet don't slide out. It is one of the horse inventions that I use almost all the time.

I have to agree with the snaffle bridle. I almost always ride bare-back and I couldn't do without it on the horse I have now! I have to admit, I used to have a different horse, and all I used was a leadrope around her neck.

I gotta agree with laura, a hoofpick is totally necessary for my horses who are out on pasture all the time and end up getting everything they can packed in their feet.

i couldn't live without a good rope halter, because i use it for everything! For leading and riding especially.

I'd go with the bridle, too, though at this time I'd give anything for a decent saddle. I have had a back injury which tipped my pelvis forward just enough that finding a saddle that does not torture me has become a three year quest. My old saddle is falling apart but is so comfortable.

Like Jodi, I have been using Parelli techniques, although I am just a beginner. I'm afraid neither me or my horse is ready for just twine. The most important thing I use is my Parelli Hackamore. We've never used a bit on my horse, and I only use a saddle 1/2 of the time.

I agree with Jodi, many times my horses get out of the fence and the handiest thing around is twine. So I ride the lead mare home with a piece of twine.

a good rope halter and lead rope that doubles as a set of reins

Posted By: anna

A good cotton rope, long so it can be used for halter, and leed at the same time if needed.

I would probably say my horse knife it has things like wire clippers that i have used many times to free my horse and it has a hoof pick for when you are riding on the trail and a stone gets caught in your horses hoof

I consider the halter the most important, can be used to catch the horse, and then of course riding. Can you really ride with a hoof pick? I haven't tried it yet! LOL

Posted By: Kathy Quick

my most important piece of tack is definently my rope halter and lead rope. the pressure points work great and since i ride bareback a lot, it saves a lot of hassle-slip it on and go! p.s. hoof picks arent tack!!!

Posted By: claire

I agree with the halter, I leave my horses in a 40 acre pasture, and normally i hve to walk a long way to catch one, so i leave a halter on them most of the time. It is so easy to walk out, catch a horse, and then not have to walk back

Posted By: Karen L.

a good, quality rope halter. I do everything from groundwork to riding with one.

Posted By: Paula

My lead rope. If my horse has taken off his halter and left I can still catch him with the lead rope. It also is good for getting rid of a croud of horses near the gate or with any other animals.

Posted By: Sarah

I can't live without my halter. I can ride with a halter, lung with a halter, even show with a halter. they are the best!

Posted By: anonymous

ahalter because you can lead with one and ride

Posted By: ashley hurd

mint to give my horse after a session(i know, that's not tack...but she likes it!)

Posted By: danser

My faviort peice of tack would have to be a saddle pad if we rode them all the time with out it then it would hurt their backs and we would not be able to ride

Posted By: Kara

n/a. I could live without tack. Really. I always wanted to get a horse, and just ride around tackless (no bride/saddle/martingale/crop) and ride like we were truly meant to.

      Is an apple considered tack?

Posted By: Russ

a bridle, with my girls I don't need a halter. I'm not built for bareback riding so my martin marathon saddle is my 2nd choice. It is so-o-o-o comfy!

Posted By: Jan

I can not live with out my good pair of equitation spurs. It just doesn't fell right unless I can feel the horses ribs and hips.

Posted By: anonymous

I couldn't live without my hackamore.Just ride bareback and slip it on.

20 FEET OF 5/8 INCH ROPE. out of this I can fashion a "come along", I can construct a working War Bridle, complete with reins, a lounge line, a pickett string,a corral of sorts and best off, a rope to twirl when I'm just sittin and thinking 'bout horse stuff.

Posted By: SJFORBES

I would have to say a good flat cotton lungeline. Travels with me everywhere! I use it to get stubborn horses in a trailer, (long enough to use as a buttrope) I use it to lead, I can make a makeshift bridle/reins out of it, I can tie a horse with it, I can I lunge, I can make an emergency corral, the list is endless!

All I need is a six foot lead rope, you can make a halter out of it and use the parts left for reins. It's also great for trail rides under full tack, in case you stop to water at a local barn or show grounds.

      hackamore

Posted By: anonymous

my Pat Parelli hackamore. I love it my horse reaponds much better to it than when I ride with a kimberwickle. Every one should ride their horses in a hackamore!

Posted By: Caroline

a good lead rope with a spliced loop. Simply thrown over his head and brought around his nose for a halter

Posted By: Ronr

what an obvious difference in 'horseman(/woman!)ship here - while one person needs only a haltar to ride their horse another 'needs' spurs........

Posted By: anonymous

i definatly couldn't live without a halter. It's the most versitile item my horse and i own.

Posted By: Ken

my Parelli carrot stick & progress string! I couldn't live without it!

Posted By: danielle

A halter.I can ride bareback with it and plus my oldest horse used to escape the pasture at night and go down the road!

Posted By: amanda

I fully agree with SJFORBES a 200 foot 5/8" rope and that is all one needs. I have a 3 yr old Morgan I often ride with just a rope halter.

Posted By: Caitlin

I have read all of the above, but can you really own a horse on one piece of taack?!? My tack would be a good dandy brush. I can ride and steer my mare using just my legs, and she stands on comand, but how else could I brush the sweat off of her????????
