Oh, and to response to cristil, horses like to do tricks to please their owners or other people they love. Even if they dont get a treat, it is still fun for them, like it is to do someting fancy to impress family or friends.

Horses "hug" naturally. It is a communication method. Most horses I have had will hug when you groom their mane. To do this, reach your fingertips deep into the mane/neck area, scratch pleasantly (not too rough or you will communicate something entirely different and the routine will become a dominance or "go away" move) you want this to be pleasant to your horse, if you stand close to the horses head while "grooming" the mane, the horse should reach his/her head over your shoulder and rub gently back, watch out for teeth, however, wilds typically will try to groom YOUR mane as well, and since they use teeth on each other to do this, it isn't recommended you teach your horse to groom your mane as well. Remember to tell your horse that they have done well "Good boy - I love you too - good job" etc and reward, I don't give treats, I pet, rub or verbally reward the horse only as I don't wish to carry treats with me all the time and I don't want the horse getting used to expecting treats all the time.

I tried this with my 5-year-old percheron/arab gelding and he caught on really fast. Thanks for the detailed article, you explain everything very clearly. We both enjoy his newly-acquired skill!! (He especially likes the treat part).
