Thanks for the great tips. I have got a 17,2hh horse so it is harder to get on but he stands like a rock. I have always mounted as close to the horse as I can, as I am scared of falling. Although I have always held the cantel with my right hand, I knew that mountng twisted the horses back and I always mounted with very high blocks to try and ease the twisting. Now I know this I will always mount this way. Thanks

Nice article. I have always mounted "holding mane", been very respectful of my buckskin's back, checked his tack, walked him out to ensure nothing was "pinching" before mounting - HOWEVER I made a BIG mistake letting him move around a bit whilst I mounted him. Trust me, if you think it is "no biggy" to have to deal with a horse moving while you get on ... and you never correct this "little issue"...you will really regret it someday (assuming you keep horses like I do .. from the cradle to the grave). As one gets older.. and a bit chubbier...this "unimportant issue" becomes huge, and difficult to correct...and it is all your fault for not having corrected it yester-year!

Thanks for the tips for mounting. I will try them on my Quarter Horse/Arabian. He tries to buck as I mount him. I am unsure whether it is a behavoir problem or if it is a physical problem. But thanks, anyway.

Great article thank you. My ribs are hurting from a spill I recently took because my Arabian wont stand still for mounting.

What is the correct method to teach my mare not to swing her hind quarter away from me when using a mounting block? She does it every time you touch the sturrup making it impossible to get on. She can only be mounted from the ground because of this behaviour.

Thank you so much!!! I am a rather green rider with a newly trained horse and I have been searching for days on "HOW to mount/dismount correctly" as my horse was refusing to stand still and then as I got off would squeal. So, I knew I was hurting her. You really hit the nail on the head with your articles.
