My 12-year old mareis having similar head tossing issues as Lauren's horse above. I've had her teeth checked and they are fine. In the 5 years I've been riding her, she's never acted like this. She seems to be irritated as if something is up her nose or in her ears. She, too, only tosses vertically, not side to side. She cannot even keep a steady gait going because her head tossing gets her off balance. My vet watched me lounge her and thinks she may have a back leg problem and is compensating with her head. However, she is not limping and wants to go, go, go. If would think if she has a hurt leg, she would be limping and not wanting to go fast. Any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated.

I would like help with my mare, owned for 8 months now, tried to do the headtossing when first had her but then stopped...ive recently had teeth and back checked and no problem there, recently over last couple months head tossing very bad with any contact and sometimes without any contact on mouth....bolted off on a clinic after a jump and couldnt stop..she used to drive and then was used for jumping, she is ridden in a happy mouth with standing martingale 3 ring....i have called my vet who said could be behavioural or something wrong and they do a bute test where they put horse on drugs for 3 weeks , if the pain goes and stops it there is problem somewhere, if not its behavioural...can anyone help me at all with any problems or experiences they have come across..i have tried to be firm when she does this but its making no difference so unsure whether it is behavioural? thanks Michelle

horses who headshake have usually got a reaction to light sensetivity or an allergy, making a horse hold a outline while been ridden is bordering on cruelty as the pain a horse feels in its muzzle is like us having a serious tooth ache in our nose.the best thing to do is find a eye net that is UVA/UVB (a bit like sunglasses for horses!) it will help in some cases but not all, also a high factor non perfumed sunblock helps on the nose, even if they dont suffer from sunburn, try to ride in sprin/summer at times when the sun is less strong, and keep to the roads more in spring/summer as the flys are less bothersome.hope this helps, please dont tell your horse off as the pain they feel is bad and putting more contact on the mouth just adds to the pain

I have just posted a comment and on re-reading it I see that I have made a big mistake, where I said 'should be doing this...' I meant to say 'shouldn't be doing this' placing my hands on his mane that is.

Thank you for this article - It's helpful to know others have this problem. But I'd like to know, if the horse has medical/dental problems does he shake his head all the time or only occasionally? My horse does it occasionaly when I ask him to canter, he shakes violently from side to side which has caused me to fall off. If I stop him and begin again he is better, especially if I hold the reins on his mane.(Im sure I should be doing this) He doesn't 'fight with his head' if this is what he is doing!! if my son rides him. I must add that I do not ride him very often and he is worse if I haven't ridden for three or four weeks. (It's because I have lost a lot of confidence)

My mare tosses her head when being ridden and also displayd the behavior in the pasture, though only a fraction as much. I have been trying your soloution and it is somewhat helpful but hasn't stopped the behavior. Upon examination a while ago, the vet says her nasal passage is about the size of a dime when it should be bigger than a quarter. I have also looked into sunsensitivity issues, purchased a mask but the horse tries to rub it off so I stopped that. She throws her head so much a times that the snaffle rolls over. The tossing is only vertical, not side to side. If I get off and stand to the side, she rubs her muzzle hard against me. I don't know what to do. Thanks for the article.
