I have a seven year old Appaloosa gelding who often ignores my cues for forward movement, but usually only when I ride him in an enclosed area. On the trail, he will usually move out nicely for me, but is very stubborn in the sand ring. I start out gently squeezing him and gradually work up to all-out kicking him and tapping him on the shoulder with the whip (he bucks if the whip comes close to his hindquarters). Any suggestions of how to get better results when not on the trail?

I have a 16 yr old gelding new to me. Test rode him before buying all was fine. Now he resists moving forward when asked. Acting like he wants to buck I asked him to move forward. He bolted and threw is head . Throwing me off balanc and His head hitting me in the nose. Everyone is ok Im just not sure what is going on with him. Seems to respond to the bit ok.

I also had a horse just like this. It feels weird the first couple times when you have to increase your tapping to be hard enough to get the horse's attention...but after a few repetitions my horse learned right away and I started to make the tapping lighter then. Now he responds just when I point to his hip with the whip, and I don't even have to touch him...he has become very responsive to me.
