I have a 3 yr old gelding that is so bad about chewing and pulling on the lead rope it makes it nearly impossible to do any kind of training. The whole time I'm giving pressure to his pole, all he can think about is how to get that lead rope in his mouth. He's hoping once he gets it, I'll pull on it. He LOVES that tug of war game. I've though about ignoring him until he just gets bored with it, but believe he might swallow it. This "drop the rein" cue sounds interesting, although I'm a little afraid to start any food reward training with him for fear it will make him nippy. I must say I've been doing clicker training with my 15 yr old., though and after a couple of days of just ignoring him while he looked for treats, he gave it up completely. Now he spends all his energy concentrating on what behavior I'm asking for in order to get clicked and reward. Would this be the same result with the drop the rain cue using a food reward? Or is it necessary to use the clicker bridge for the mouthy horses?
