I like the article in terms of teaching a horse not to pull on the bit...but I must point out that this is not and never should be how to get a horse on the bit. On the bit does not mean that the head is vertical and neck rounded. On the bit is when the hindquarters are fully engaged, the back is rounded, the horse is forward off the leg and takes the contact. This allows the rounded back to continue through the spine, meaning balanced head carriage with the nose on or just above the vertical. This article shows how to stop pulling, but if you want your horse to be "on the bit", you should never use alternate sideways felxion to ask for it. You should ride forward from the leg, hold rein contact when the horse is stiff in the neck and jaw and release that contact the instant the horse softens to reward to softening. When releasing that hold...do so only with the inside rein as you should always ride from the inside leg to the outside rein, so be consistent with that outside rein and keep the contact in that outside rein light, but, as said, consistent.

This is very nice advice. I recently purchased a horse who had the same problem. I read this article and right away took your advice. In about a week the problem was solve.

This article is very good, but one thing that maybe should be added is that the most important thing of all when working your horse and trying to get her going in a correct outline, is that she is going forward, this doesn't mean that she is going fast, just make sure she is going forward from your leg, at the end of the day, your horse will never be going freely and correctly untill she has learnt to go forward and working in a long loose outline first. Also please remember when trying to get your horse working in a round outline it must NOT come from your hands, it must come from your seat and legs, if it comes from your hands she will not be working from behind as she should be.
