You obvioulsy dont want to tight brakes as that could send a horse head first into the trailer wall if you hit it but it needs to safley stop 2000 pounds of horse within a few yards

I have a question if that's okay. I am new to this, so I am having difficulty knowing how tight to set my horse trailer's brakes. I took it out for a test ride and when I breaked they felt way too tight. I've loosened them up, but how do I know if I've loosened them too much and won't be effective? P.S. Don't worry, I haven't attempted this with a horse in tow.....
