I have kinda the same problem, I have a 16.3 thoroughbred mare who just turned 5 April 11th. She was a race horse for 2 years and now im training her to be a hunter/jumper. Lately when I try to ride her I can maybe get her a couple feet into the ring and she will stop and won't move. I have tried using my crop which she doesn't care for and I have also tried to use my leg but she will stop her foot once and thats it. It has got to the point before where I sat there for 15 minutes waiting and trying to get her to move forward but she wouldn't go so I had to get off and walk her out of the arena. But I didn't just give up after I got off I started to lunge her so either way she would get worked for she wouldn't get to win that easily. Any tips or suggestions or things I should do that could help me?

PS We live in griz country, and running loose by himself (most of his life without being with other horses, and we ride alone) several years I've little doubt he hasnt had close encounters so his fears - I take seriously but often are of close brush. His protectiveness is real, putting himself at risk to protect me, he saved my life. And from his perspective he is being protective, so punishing him for doing so? Instead of moving forward moves backwards or sideways, anything BUT forward unless I do as described in the last post.

My horse knows forward, but at times when afraid, freezes up. More pressure only only gets resisted. He is extremely respectful to me so it "isn't" disrespect in this case. I've tried everything but the only thing that works at these times is dismounting and leading him forward past his fear spot, then mounting him. Or leading him past the fear spot, going back to it again, and mounting him and he will walk most of the time. His former owner pushed him hard when he wouldn't move forward when afraid and put her into the hospital. Other than this he is a very willing loving cooperative trusting and respectful horse. I need an alternative to force or dismounting because real life means a time will come I wont be able to (like in the middle of a road and he freezes). Using force is hurting our relationship and seems to be destroying his trust in me. I need an alternative. I feel the problem is not him, but my ability to find the correct solution. He knows what I want, and it may not even be himself he is trying to protect, but "me" and he dose do that (is protective of me). So using a whip at such times - I think both he and I feel is almost insane because his heart is in the right place.

To Rudy, maybe you can try tapping him for a few seconds, then using pressure on the halter to reinforce your request? I've had a few horses like this before, but the harder tapping always got their attention.

To Kelly, the only problem is, is that I've tried. I've made it so hard I was afraid I was gonna hurt him. But nope that time he did nothing...still.

To Rudy, obviously it wasn't annoying enough to inspire him to change what he was doing. You need to figure out how much pressure your horse needs to be inspired to move.

I have this trouble with my horse i stood tapping for 45 minutes before I quit. The horse showed it was very annoying but he didn't move. He stomped his foot a few times. Any suggestions would help greatly.

I also had a horse just like this. It feels weird the first couple times when you have to increase your tapping to be hard enough to get the horse's attention...but after a few repetitions my horse learned right away and I started to make the tapping lighter then. Now he responds just when I point to his hip with the whip, and I don't even have to touch him...he has become very responsive to me.
