I just purchased a Grulla mare, she has everything that a grulla should have as far as I can tell. She has great confirmation, she is thirteen years old, there are no papers available for her. It seems that a horse with her obvious breeding and color (also no white) would not have been registered somewhere, sometime. Does anyone know of anyway to try and research lost papers. I love her very much so papers are just for curiousity. Thank you very much Alice

my mare was a buck skin with the dorsal strip a dark strip from the main to the tail, she has dark main and tail, as it got toward the end of summer she has changed colors to a dark dunn or a dunn,,,if that right, reddish brown maybe better describes her, as well as she is getting pushy and meaner, she may be preg too im not shure.....so tell me will she return back to her buck skin color again...larry

This was an informative article. I have a 3 month old filly who definately , now, looks to be a grulla. At birth, and for the first w months, however, she looked more like her mother, a golden buckskin, except she had the mask (looked like heavy black makeup) around both eyes and a black, fist sized area on her forehead. In the past month her face has become much darker, her legs are becoming more and more black and she hasall the markings described in the article except the lighter hair in her mane and at the tail head. She has had the dorsal stripe since birth as well. Her coloring continues to change and when I look at her baby pictures I am amazed at how much change has taken place already. Her sire is a grullo and her dame a golden (vs.buttermilk) buckskin. So far I see no white markings on her at all.

There are other breeds out there than QH, they are not the only option....... Oh and why is it the picture of the buckskin has a dorsal stripe when the description says that they do not carry a dorsal stripe??

I have a foal born last week which people have said looks like it could be a grullo (colt). His mother is jet black. His father is palamino. Both registered quarter horses. Can anyone tell me what a grullo looks like when it's born i.e.what colour. At the moment his legs are mousey his body black, his head is a mixture of mousey and black any clues would be great

I have a quarter horse yearling who I think may be a grulla but I cannot find any picture that matches her markings? Her dorsal stipe is white, black legs, black ear edging, chestnut face, her white stripe runs from her ears to her tail, but does the dorsal stripe need to be black? She was chestnut color when I bought her, turned white in winter and slowly became marked as she is now. Her sire was slate, dam chestnut.

To. Stacy I just wanted to say I have a grulla filly, and she doesn't change colors much in the winter if they are really dark there is a posibility of going all black, but when they are lighter they won't change that much depending on if you keep a blanket on them or not.

when you register with ABRA it asks what color the sclera is. My fillys eyes look blue with brown sclera is that right, or am I looking at them wrong?

FYI, "Grullo" is the male term, "Grulla" female. It's spanish, and almost everything has two forms :-) UltimateHorseSite.com

Thank you for this informative article. I am looking to possibly buy a 4yr old mare, that was described to me as grulla. She has an almost black face with white star, black mane and tail, black legs, Her body is brownish/black and she has the definite black dorsal stripe, with what appears to be mottling or calico type pattern on her shoulders, but she does not appear gray to me. In certain light, there is a grayish cast. More of a mousey brown color. Is she still considered grulla. She has no papers, etc. Not sure of breed. She is very pretty and looks like a combo of anything from QH to mustang to TB to morgan. Anyway I'm not too hung up on all this but would love your thoughts. Most importantly she's a sweetie and learns quick. Thanks. Nancy

Most of the grullas I have seen do not get darker in the winter, but lighter. Our Silver Girl gets a mousy brownish grey in the winter, but is a lovely silver grey in the summer once all that winter hair has shed. You can see her pictures at www.ranchodecorazone.50megs.com

If a grullo were to be bred to a palomino, chestnut, and another dun, would all such breedings be capable of producing another dun...not necessarily a gullo? A colour expert just told me that the differences in name--grullo/gulla, was the sex of the horse in question, and said that a chestnut X grullo, could not produce dun. (??)I believe this information to be wrong...but I am no expert. Thanks, Love this site by the way, I frequent it a lot!! Keep up the awesome work!!

To Kristen: you might want to contact the association or organization which your horse is registered with for details on possibly modifying her records. Some associations don't allow color changes.
