The horse you are calling a "Bay Dun" is a dunskin. Genetically speaking it has a Creme Gene (bucksin) a Dun Gene and Bay as it's base coat. If it were Bay with Dun only it would be a 'zebra dun' check out coat color genetics information. Creme is a dilution gene and Dun is a simple dominant gene. YOu can even have a cremmello Dun in theory, although I haven't seen one.

I have a Bay(?)colt, who has always had a faint dorsal stripe from wither to tail, but as he sheds out, his base coat is black/brown, and his dorsal stripe is now very prominent and black. I don't see any barring or anything, and he has all the black points that a bay would. He is by a black bay tobiano stallion out of a chestnut TB mare. There are duns in the pedigree, but I think I am wishful thinking?

Just an fyi to those asking if their 'dun' doesn't have a dorsal stripe, if thats uncommon, the answer is yes, only because a dorsal stripe is required. The horse must be BORN with the stripe, along with the genetic potential of being a dun. Aka when my mom bred a buckskin to a bay, and the foal was born with a dorsal stripe, it was not a dun, you must have a dun parent, this horse grew up to be a smutty buckskin. I have a dun mare, she has produced a grulla and a red dun so far. I love love love duns.

I own a beautiful mare and is said to be a Bay dun. She has a dorsal sripe and is a dark golden color and almost looks bay. Is this the correct color?

Yes, Heidi, there is a specific Dun Horse Registry. Infact there are two, one for horses that carry the dun gene and can be any color any breed & one for any breed of horse that is a Dun Varriation (ONLY: base coat + dun Factor) www.nadhr.com

if your horse doesn't have a dorsal, it is not a dun. Duns must have a dorsal. Many duns weren't mentioned in this article, it is just basic I think

I am a new horse owner and have a foal the color of a dun but a breeder I know says she's a blue grullo. Is there really such a thing as I didn't see mention of a blue grullo on the grullo site.
