UC Davis has a genetics test for relative homo/heterozygosity (in relation to the red gene for chestnut)of the gene for black. A homozygous black horse (mare or stallion) will never produce a chestnut, but a heterozygous one might. Chenck out UC Davis' neat site at:http://www.vgl.ucdavis.edu/service/horse/coatcolor.html.

I have the opportunity to purchase a black yearling filly but she has white/grey spots on her coat. Is she a true black??

The Jockey Club is too picky about registering horses as black. Devil His Due, Sunday Silence, etc are black!

ok, according to this my gelding is a true black. he does bleach out in the summer, mostly just his midsection, his head, neck, legs and rump stay black. i just refer to him then as black/bay.

If the horse has a solid black coat but quite a bit of brown/red in the mane-is he still true black. I had a TW/QH gelding that was so black in the summer he looked blue but in the winter he did get red cover hairs-he was an outside horse. Now I'm wondering if he was a true black but got sunbleached in winter???

I have a true black thoroughbred mare that does not fade in the summer. She dapples in the summer and actually looks midnight blue/black in the sunlight. I am confused as you said most blacks will fade in the summer. I read an article that described 3 black colors - one being a non-fading black. She was bred to a black/white tobiano warmblood and produced a black foal. Can a mare be homogenous black? I have only seen this term pertaining to stallions.

I have a registered "solid black" APHA (stock) mare. I have been told that "true blacks" do not bleach out in the summer. I also have been told if her muzzle and points are black in the summer then she is a true black. This is so confusing!! In the winter her coat/tail is solid black. In the summer she has solid black points and head while her flank is brown/black. Is she true blacK?
